It seems that everyone has a web site these days or is planning one. If you are ready to take the plunge and create your first web site there are several ways to go. You can hire a professional designer to create the site for you. However, if you're on a budget, you will want to save the expenses and do it yourself. Here are some web site design tips to help you get started.

Website planning is probably the number one most important part of building a website. It can also be the most frustrating, especially if you don't start with a good understanding of how the Internet works and or you have unreasonable expectations about how your site should be designed. The first mistake we see many people make is that they do not do any website planning at all. Without a basic, clear plan about how your website should function it will take you longer to complete it, make it harder for you to accomplish your goals, and will make it difficult for your visitors to find what they are looking for. We suggest that you start your website planning with a diagram that shows how your pages will be organized.

When first starting out it is helpful to know a little about hyper text markup language (HTML). This can readily be achieved with a little reading up on the subject or find an online tutorial. HTML is a basic code that simple to use once you get the hang of it. However, designing a website or web page strictly with HTML code can be very difficult, especially for a beginner. That's why it's advisable to use a what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) web design program. WYSIWYG means that you can easily build a site using simple drag and drop and an easy to use text editor. Microsoft Front Page, NVU, and Dreamweaver are examples of this type of software and there are lots of other titles that work in basically the same way. Some of them are even freeware (NVU for example), which means they are free of charge to download and use.

If you are designing a website for internet marketing purposes you have another great choice in web site design tools to consider. FrontPage® and DreamWeaver® are both great pieces of software but they were NOT designed with Internet Marketers in mind. This way you can start to put your site to work for you a lot sooner as you build it up.

Websites are never totally finished. There are always updates that needs to be done and fine tuning to get the best search engine listings. Having a feature rich website, full of many pages of products and valuable information is exactly what your visitors and the search engines like to see and that should definitely be your long term goal. But we hav seen many people give up because they never get their site complete enough to take full advantage of it. If your site is a mess, disorganized, and full of empty pages more than likely it will be a failure. Start small, take advantage of helpful software and you will have your site up and running before you know it!
